Potential reason behind Trump’s 'strange insistence' on Iran deal timing stuns onlookers

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that a deal to end the U.S. war against Iran would be signed Sunday – a timeline Iranian media described as his "strange insistence" – and onlookers think they know why.

“Is this idiot trying to settle this foreign policy debacle Sunday, just so he can announce it on his birthday tomorrow during the UFC fight?” asked Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) in a social media post on X.

Trump turns 80 years old on Sunday, and is already set to celebrate the occasion with an unprecedented Ultimate Fighting Championship match at the White House. As reported by the Iranian Fars News Agency, however, Iranian officials have already signaled that finalizing a deal would not be possible by Sunday.

“An hour ago, Trump once again emphasized that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran will be signed on Sunday. This comes even as Iranian officials have explicitly stated that the agreement has not been finalized and will definitely not take place on Sunday,” Fars News Agency reported, according to an automatic translation of the outlet’s social media post from its original Persian.

“An intriguing point is the coincidence of Sunday with June 14th, Trump's birthday. Some observers speculate that he is pursuing this insistence in order to symbolically exploit the occasion and turn it into a promotional event for himself.”

The news outlet noted, however, that it appeared as though Iranian negotiators were acutely aware of Trump’s hidden motives and would “not allow such media and ceremonial maneuvering.”

“Fars more or less confirming that the main reason Iran won't be signing the MOU tomorrow is because they don't want to give Trump the satisfaction of signing on his birthday,” wrote senior analyst Gregory Brew of the Eurasia Group. “Seems fitting that this should serve as the endgame.”
