OpenAI has acquired technology talk show TBPN to expand its communication strategy beyond core products. The company announced the deal on April 2 and did not disclose financial terms. The move places the Los Angeles-based livestream program under OpenAI’s ownership while it keeps editorial control.
OpenAI confirmed that it purchased TBPN as part of a broader outreach plan. The company said it wants to guide public discussion as artificial intelligence gains wider adoption. Fidji Simo, chief of strategy at OpenAI, outlined the intent in an internal memo.

Simo wrote that OpenAI sees a need for “real, constructive conversation” as AI systems integrate into daily life. She added that TBPN can create that space and extend the company’s reach. OpenAI stated that the show will retain full editorial control despite the ownership change.
The company said TBPN will continue its daily livestream format without disruption. However, OpenAI expects the show to support broader communications and marketing efforts. Simo cited TBPN’s experience in brand storytelling and industry coverage as key factors in the decision.
OpenAI acquired the show shortly after closing a $122 billion funding round. Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank led that financing round. The funding increased OpenAI’s valuation and strengthened its capital position.
TBPN streams live for three hours each weekday across multiple platforms. Hosts John Coogan and Jordi Hays lead discussions with founders and technology executives. The program features interviews and analysis focused on startups and venture capital.
Recent guests have included Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman. Their appearances reflect the show’s access to senior leaders in technology. Each episode draws about 70,000 viewers across X, YouTube, and Spotify.
TBPN launched in October 2024 and began daily livestreaming in March 2025. Since then, it has built a focused audience within the technology sector. The show positions itself closer to industry perspectives than traditional outlets such as Bloomberg or CNBC.
OpenAI stated that ownership will not alter TBPN’s editorial decisions. The company emphasized that the hosts will continue to select guests and topics independently. OpenAI expects the collaboration to align media production with its communication goals.
The acquisition reflects OpenAI’s plan to broaden how it presents information to the public. The company aims to integrate media assets into its overall strategy. It confirmed the transaction on April 2 and declined to disclose the purchase price.
