Disney and Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, is coming soon to streaming on Disney+.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened in theaters on July 25 and made its digital streaming via premium video on demand debut on Sept. 23. The official summary for The Fantastic Four: First Steps reads, “Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet.
“Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
Disney+ announced on Friday that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will make its debut on the streaming video on demand on the platform on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
For viewers who don’t subscribe to Disney+, the platform offers an ad-based Disney+ Basic plan for $9.99 per month and an ad-free Disney+ Premium plan for $15.99 per month or $159.99 per year.
How Matt Shakman Went Retro With A ‘Whole New Universe’ For ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.’
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is different than the previous film iterations about Marvel’s First Family of Superheroes in that it’s set in an alternate universe reminiscent of the 1960s. It was only appropriate, considering Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s first Fantastic Four comic book was released in 1961.
For director Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps marked the second time he created a retro setting after directing all nine episodes of Marvel’s Disney+ series WandaVision in 2021— and he took both opportunities very seriously.
“Both of these worlds required a lot of authenticity and research. We wanted it to be as believable as possible. With Wanda, we were recreating sitcoms. Here, [in The Fantastic Four: First Steps], we are building a whole new universe, Earth-828 in the ‘60s,” Shakman told Marvel online.
“It’s very unlike our ‘60s because this ‘60s has Reed Richards, who is sort of like Oppenheimer meets Einstein meets Steve Jobs,” Shakman added. “By the mid-‘60s in this universe, he’s invented H.E.R.B.I.E. robots and monorails and all sorts of amazing technology. So, it feels like the ‘60s, but it has this layer of retro-futuristic tech on top of it.”
The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which also stars Paul Walter Hauser as Harvey Elder/Mole Man, Natasha Lyonne as Rachel Rozman, Sarah Niles as F4 Chief of Staff Lynne Nichols and the voice of Matthew Wood as The Fantastic Four’s robot H.E.R.B.I.E., arrives on SVOD on Disney+ on Nov. 5.
