Pi Network Mainnet Achieves Protocol 20 Upgrade, Unlocking Smart Contract Capabilities

Pi Network has reached a major milestone with the successful upgrade of its Mainnet to Protocol 20, signaling a new era for the network and its expanding ecosystem. This technical advancement lays the foundation for smart contracts, enabling developers and Pioneers to explore advanced decentralized applications and Web3 functionalities. The upgrade highlights Pi Network’s continued focus on innovation, scalability, and providing real utility to its global community.

Protocol 20: The Foundation for Smart Contracts

With the deployment of Protocol 20, Pi Network introduces the infrastructure necessary to support smart contracts, which are programmable agreements executed automatically on the blockchain. This functionality enables a wide range of applications, from decentralized finance tools to autonomous marketplaces, increasing the utility of Pi Coin within the ecosystem.

Smart contracts allow for secure, transparent, and automated transactions without reliance on intermediaries. For Pi Network, this means Pioneers and developers can interact with applications more efficiently, manage token flows programmatically, and participate in complex decentralized operations, laying the groundwork for a robust Web3 economy.

Node Operators: Ensuring Seamless Network Functionality

Node operators are central to the health and performance of the Pi Network Mainnet. Following the Protocol 20 upgrade, it is essential that all nodes update their systems to remain synchronized and fully functional. Keeping node software current ensures the smooth execution of smart contracts, transaction validation, and overall network security.

Additionally, instructions for the upcoming v21 upgrade will be communicated to node operators in advance. Proactive preparation will help maintain operational continuity, prevent disruptions, and enable nodes to support new features and enhancements as the network continues to evolve.

Driving Innovation and Ecosystem Expansion

Protocol 20 opens significant opportunities for the Pi Network ecosystem. Developers can now build more sophisticated dApps that leverage smart contract functionality, enabling advanced token management, automated workflows, and decentralized governance mechanisms. This empowers the community to experiment with new use cases, expand utility, and attract broader participation.

The upgrade also enhances the functional role of Pi Coin. Beyond serving as a medium of exchange, Pi Coin can now be utilized programmatically within smart contracts, increasing its relevance and driving real-world adoption across various applications.

Security and Decentralization Remain Core Priorities

The Protocol 20 upgrade was implemented with a strong focus on security and decentralized operation. Pi Network ensures that smart contract execution is resistant to vulnerabilities while maintaining distributed control among nodes. This combination of innovation and safety strengthens the network’s reliability and protects the interests of all Pioneers.

The upgrade demonstrates Pi Network’s commitment to building a secure, scalable, and decentralized environment where developers and users can confidently participate in a growing Web3 ecosystem.

Looking Ahead to Protocol 21

While Protocol 20 establishes smart contract capabilities, the anticipated v21 upgrade promises additional improvements. Future updates may include performance optimizations, enhanced developer tools, and new ecosystem features that further expand the functionality of the Pi Network. Staying informed and prepared for these changes will ensure that node operators and developers maximize the benefits of the platform’s ongoing evolution.

Conclusion

The successful upgrade of Pi Network’s Mainnet to Protocol 20 marks a critical step in the platform’s journey toward a fully functional Web3 ecosystem. By enabling smart contracts, the network offers developers and Pioneers a foundation to build decentralized applications, automate processes, and enhance the utility of Pi Coin.

Node operators play a pivotal role in supporting this transition, and adherence to system updates is essential for seamless network performance. As the ecosystem prepares for Protocol 21, Pi Network continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation, security, and long-term growth.

Protocol 20 not only strengthens the technical backbone of Pi Network but also empowers its global community to participate in a dynamic, decentralized economy. The upgrade signifies a turning point for Pioneers, developers, and investors, positioning Pi Network as a leading platform in the Web3 and crypto space.

The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For

The post The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Visions of future technology are often prescient about the broad strokes while flubbing the details. The tablets in “2001: A Space Odyssey” do indeed look like iPads, but you never see the astronauts paying for subscriptions or wasting hours on Candy Crush.  Channel factories are one vision that arose early in the history of the Lightning Network to address some challenges that Lightning has faced from the beginning. Despite having grown to become Bitcoin’s most successful layer-2 scaling solution, with instant and low-fee payments, Lightning’s scale is limited by its reliance on payment channels. Although Lightning shifts most transactions off-chain, each payment channel still requires an on-chain transaction to open and (usually) another to close. As adoption grows, pressure on the blockchain grows with it. The need for a more scalable approach to managing channels is clear. Channel factories were supposed to meet this need, but where are they? In 2025, subnetworks are emerging that revive the impetus of channel factories with some new details that vastly increase their potential. They are natively interoperable with Lightning and achieve greater scale by allowing a group of participants to open a shared multisig UTXO and create multiple bilateral channels, which reduces the number of on-chain transactions and improves capital efficiency. Achieving greater scale by reducing complexity, Ark and Spark perform the same function as traditional channel factories with new designs and additional capabilities based on shared UTXOs.  Channel Factories 101 Channel factories have been around since the inception of Lightning. A factory is a multiparty contract where multiple users (not just two, as in a Dryja-Poon channel) cooperatively lock funds in a single multisig UTXO. They can open, close and update channels off-chain without updating the blockchain for each operation. Only when participants leave or the factory dissolves is an on-chain transaction…
