Despite sweltering heat in Washington, D.C., the Dupont Circle Art Walk brought free art exhibits to the area, including a special dual-feature edition at the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office in partnership with Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI). The event showcased two acclaimed realist portrait painters: Sahr Songu Mbriwa, known professionally as Bondumani, and Patrick Smith, offering attendees a powerful convergence of global artistry and human rights advocacy.

Bondumani, a Sierra Leonean hyperrealist who recently appeared on CNN, presented oil and acrylic canvases that magnify the raw emotion and dignity of his subjects. His works, brought directly from Freetown, appear to leap from the canvas. While in the United States, Bondumani is seeking support for the arts in Sierra Leone, where basic art supplies are scarce. He aims to offer free tuition at his Bondumani Art school in Freetown to develop the talents of youth who cannot afford it. More about his story can be found at https://www.bondumani.com/art/#story.

Complementing this global perspective, Patrick Smith, named YHRI DC Artist of the Year 2025, displayed deeply humanistic works focused on civil rights. Smith, who paints rapidly and deftly, exhibited a piece he created that morning. His collages feature civil rights leaders like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as interesting people and children. ‘My artwork tells the truth. Subjects like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. are those who have fought for human rights, equality and respect,’ Smith commented. He will hold a one-man show during the August Art Walk on August 7, 2026, including a painting demonstration.

The exhibit served as a reminder of art’s capacity to transcend cultural divides and unite communities under a shared humanitarian vision. In addition to the art, the event featured community outreach and public awareness of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with free educational tools and videos covering the 30 fundamental human rights.

YHRI, a nonprofit organization, educates youth about human rights through innovative programs such as art exhibitions and interactive events, inspiring young people to become advocates for peace and tolerance. By positioning the works of Bondumani and Smith in parallel, the Art Walk offered an extraordinary display of culture and advocacy, highlighting the importance of human rights in everyday life.
