Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs Attract $2.6 Billion: Is Institutional Crypto Demand Back?

Summary

U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs recorded approximately $2.6 billion in combined net inflows during the week ending August 21, their strongest combined week since October 2025.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted about $1.9 billion, while spot Ether ETFs received approximately $697.2 million. Combined trading volume climbed to roughly $29 billion, more than tripling from the previous week.

The numbers provide strong evidence that institutional and brokerage-channel demand returned during the latest crypto rally. However, one strong week does not by itself confirm that a sustained long-term ETF inflow cycle has begun.

How Much Money Flowed Into Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs?

According to The Block's analysis of SoSoValue data:

MetricBitcoin ETFsEther ETFs
Weekly net inflow$1.9B$697.2M
Weekly trading volume$22.1B$6.9B
Cumulative net inflow$53.7B$12.2B
Approx. net assets$96.1B$14.3B

Both categories recorded their strongest weekly inflows of 2026.

The shift was particularly notable because the previous week had produced approximately $392 million in combined outflows.

That represents an approximately $3 billion week-to-week change in net flow direction.

Why ETF Inflows Matter for Bitcoin and Ethereum

Spot ETFs create a regulated route for investors to gain crypto exposure through conventional securities accounts.

When money enters a spot Bitcoin or Ether ETF, authorized participants and other market intermediaries ultimately need to support the creation of new ETF shares through the fund's underlying market structure.

That makes sustained ETF inflows an important indicator of demand coming through traditional financial channels.

For readers unfamiliar with the mechanism, MEXC Learn explains the structure in What Is a Spot Bitcoin ETF? Definition, Approval, and How Flows Work.

What Changed During the Latest Week?

The biggest change was not simply that flows turned positive.

It was the combination of:

larger inflows + much higher trading volume + sharply rising crypto prices.

Bitcoin ETF volume rose from about $6.9 billion in the previous week to $22.1 billion, while Ether ETF volume increased from about $1.9 billion to $6.9 billion.

The buying was particularly strong during the middle of the week.

The Block reported approximately $517.2 million of Bitcoin ETF inflows on Wednesday and another $606.3 million on Thursday.

MEXC Had Already Detected the ETF Flow Reversal

The change was visible before the weekly totals were complete.

MEXC's August 20 Alpha Trader report noted that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs had recorded $189.3 million of single-day net inflows while spot Ether ETFs attracted $71.4 million. The report highlighted consecutive positive flow days as a possible sign of returning institutional capital.

The subsequent weekly data strengthened that signal significantly.

Are ETF Flows Driving the Crypto Rally?

They appear to be one contributor, but they should not be treated as the only cause.

Bitcoin's rebound has coincided with:

  • a major short squeeze;
  • changing Treasury-market liquidity expectations;
  • improving regulatory sentiment;
  • renewed institutional ETF buying;
  • stronger momentum across major altcoins.

Bitcoin briefly moved above $79,000 during the week, while Ether also rallied sharply.

ETF flows can reinforce price momentum because higher prices attract investor attention while inflows can add new spot demand.

The reverse is also possible: rising crypto prices can themselves attract ETF investors.

That makes causality difficult to isolate.

Does This Mean Institutional Demand Is Fully Back?

The best answer is: it has returned sharply, but durability has not yet been established.

The latest week was the strongest of 2026, yet The Block noted that Bitcoin ETFs were still approximately $2.9 billion negative for the year and Ether ETFs approximately $191.8 million negative on a year-to-date basis after earlier weakness.

Therefore, investors should distinguish between:

a powerful weekly reversal

and

a confirmed multi-month institutional accumulation trend.

Several more weeks of data would be needed to establish the latter.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

The most useful indicators are:

  1. Whether weekly ETF inflows remain positive.
  2. Whether Bitcoin and Ether ETF trading volumes stay elevated.
  3. Whether inflows continue during market pullbacks rather than only during rallies.
  4. Whether Ether ETF demand begins closing the gap with Bitcoin.
  5. Whether price appreciation is supported by spot buying rather than primarily derivatives liquidations.
