MEXC is our top pick among the exchanges in this comparison, on one number: 0.0500% spot taker against 0.10% or higher on every other platform in this comparison.
On R10,000 of Bitcoin that is R5 against R390 through the card route published by a South African platform.
The caveat is specific rather than general: MEXC runs no rand or naira bank rails, so most African traders pair it with a locally licensed platform.
This guide gives you both halves, with rates retrieved on 28 August 2026 and sourced to each platform's published schedule where machine-readable.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick for the trading layer at 0.0000% spot maker and 0.0500% taker, the lowest entry-tier rate of the four platforms compared here.
  • The same R10,000 Bitcoin purchase costs R390 by card on a South African platform and R5 on MEXC spot, a 78x spread across published rates.
  • MEXC holds no FSCA licence and runs no direct ZAR or NGN bank rails, so pair it with a locally licensed platform for local currency.
  • South Africa has the continent's most advanced regime, with 310 of 533 crypto asset service provider licences approved as at 31 March 2026.
  • Nigeria's SEC states that Approval-in-Principle is not a final licence, and Kenya's licensing window only opened on 22 July 2026.

Choosing a crypto exchange in Africa is two decisions, not one

Most guides rank ten platforms on a single scale and tell you to pick one.
That framing fails here, because the platform that reliably takes your naira is almost never the platform that lists the asset you want to buy.
Luno supports around 57 assets for customers verified in South Africa, which covers Bitcoin, Ethereum and the large caps comfortably.
Yellow Card, a pan-African on-ramp operating across more than a dozen markets, concentrates on Bitcoin, Ethereum and dollar stablecoins.
If the token you want sits outside those lists, the local venue is not expensive, it simply does not offer it.
Meanwhile the global exchanges that do list it cannot accept a rand EFT or a naira bank transfer directly.
So the decision splits in two: which platform handles your local currency, and which platform handles your trading.
The second question has a clear answer, and it is where this guide starts.

Why MEXC is our top pick for the trading layer

Start with the cost, because it is the part every African trader pays on every leg and almost nobody calculates.
An active trader in Johannesburg or Lagos who rotates positions monthly pays a taker fee of roughly 0.10% on the venues realistically open to them.
On $50,000 of monthly volume that is $50 a month, or $600 a year, before a single trade goes wrong.
MEXC charges 0.0000% on spot maker orders and 0.0500% on takers, dropping to 0.0400% when fees are paid with an MX deduction.
Those figures come from MEXC's official fee page rather than a promotional banner, and they apply at the entry tier with no volume gate to clear first.
Run the same $50,000 monthly volume through them and the annual cost is $300, or $240 with the MX deduction.
That is $300 a year retained by a trader who changed nothing except where the order was filled, or $360 for one who also holds MX to activate the deduction.
The second reason is listing speed rather than listing count.
A South African who decides to buy a token launched last month hits a hard stop on a local venue, because a curated set of roughly 57 assets does not include last month's launches.
This is not a criticism of Luno's curation, which is deliberate and suits most of its customers.
It describes a gap that a second account fills, and MEXC's listing pipeline is built around filling it.
The third is that futures sit in the same account, at 0.000% to 0.040% maker and 0.000% to 0.100% taker.
Only one platform in this comparison offers a South African both a licensed rand rail and perpetual futures, and it is not a global exchange.

Two things follow, and only one of them is about MEXC.
The expensive routes and the cheap routes sit on the same platforms, so the single largest saving available to most South African buyers is switching from the instant-buy button to a limit order on the exchange screen they already have access to.
That saving is worth more to a monthly buyer than any new account.
The R5 row is only reachable once your money is already in crypto, which is the two-account structure this guide opened with.

Our View: Where We Win, and Where We Would Send You Elsewhere

We publish this guide, so you should know where our interest sits and where it does not.
Our case is the trading layer, and we think the numbers above make it without help from adjectives.
Here is the part a ranked list would leave out.
MEXC does not hold an FSCA crypto asset service provider licence.
Luno, VALR and AltCoinTrader do, which means a South African in dispute with those platforms has a local conduct regulator to escalate to and a MEXC customer does not.
We are not going to argue that a global fee advantage cancels that out, because for some readers it does not.
We also do not serve residents of Sudan, and the MEXC Global Card is unavailable in 15 African countries with South Africa in a limited-access tier requiring a VVIP M-Score of 600 or above.
Most importantly, we run no direct rand or naira bank rails.
If you are a monthly Bitcoin buyer in Cape Town who wants one app and free EFT deposits, Luno is a better answer than we are, and switching from its 2% instant-buy button to its order book will save you more than opening an account with us would.
If regulatory recourse in your own jurisdiction is the thing you care about most, use a licensed local platform and stop reading here.
Where we are confident is the case in the section above: an active trader who rotates positions, wants assets outside a curated local list, and is paying 0.10% to do it.
That reader is why this article exists, and we would rather say so plainly than bury it under a scorecard.

Best Crypto Exchanges in Africa Compared: Fees, Rails, Licences

Four platforms cover the realistic combinations for most African users.
We chose these dimensions because they are the ones that decide the outcome: what currency you can move, what a trade costs at entry level, what you can trade, and who supervises the platform.

Data verified as of 28 August 2026 against each platform's official fee schedule, help centre and terms. Fee rates shown are entry-tier rates before volume discounts. Asset ranges are described rather than counted, because platforms classify listings differently and the numbers are not directly comparable.
One row deserves a caveat rather than a footnote.
Luno's headline 0.60% taker looks poor next to everything else, but that rate applies to crypto-to-rand pairs at the lowest volume tier.
On USDT/ZAR, Luno pays makers a 0.01% rebate and charges takers 0.20%, which is competitive with anything on this table.
The pair you choose inside a platform often matters more than the platform you choose.

How Money Actually Moves in Africa: $205 Billion and 43% Stablecoins

Africa's crypto market is not a smaller copy of Europe's.
Nigeria alone accounted for $92.1 billion, close to three times South Africa's total.
Two figures from that dataset explain the behaviour better than any adoption ranking.
Stablecoins made up roughly 43% of the region's transaction volume, and over 8% of the value transferred moved in amounts under $10,000, against 6% for the rest of the world.
Read together, those numbers describe people using dollar-pegged tokens as working money in small amounts, not speculators chasing altcoins.
Where bank rails are slow, expensive or politically exposed, peer-to-peer marketplaces become the default on-ramp rather than the fallback.
A Nigerian buying USDT through a P2P advert and a South African doing an EFT into a licensed exchange are running completely different risk profiles, and a single ranked list cannot serve both.
P2P carries its own failure modes, which the safety checklist near the end of this guide covers.

Country availability and regulation in 2026

Regulatory position changes what protection you have, so it belongs next to the fee table rather than in a footer.

Regulatory status verified as of 28 August 2026 against FSCA, SARS, Nigerian SEC and Central Bank of Kenya publications, and against MEXC's User Agreement.
One correction is worth making explicitly, because several widely-read guides get it wrong.
The firms operating under the SEC's programme hold Approval-in-Principle rather than a full licence, which the Commission states explicitly.
That is a meaningful step, and it is not the same thing as a licence.

Best crypto exchanges in South Africa

South Africa is the one African market where the licensing question has a clear answer.
The FSCA began licensing crypto asset service providers under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act on 1 June 2023.
By 31 March 2026 it had received 533 applications, approved 310 and declined 17, with a further 124 withdrawn after engagement with the regulator.
Luno, VALR and AltCoinTrader are all on the licensed list.
For a South African reader that is the single most useful filter available, and it is worth applying before any fee comparison.

What each licensed platform is actually good at

Luno is the strongest option for someone who wants crypto to feel like online banking.
EFT deposits are free, normal ZAR withdrawals are free, and the app is genuinely built for people who do not want an order book.
Luno also runs crypto payments at Pick n Pay stores and offers tokenised stocks at a 1% trade cost, neither of which a global exchange gives a South African.
Its weakness is the price of convenience: the instant-buy button costs 2% and the card route costs 3.9%.
VALR is the better fit for anyone comfortable with an order book.
Entry-tier fiat-pair fees of 0.180% maker and 0.350% taker are meaningfully cheaper than Luno's equivalent, it offers perpetual futures at 0.030% and 0.070%, and it gives 30 free rand withdrawals a month.
The trade-off is a steeper learning curve and a Simple Buy/Sell shortcut that costs 1.6% if you avoid the order book anyway.
AltCoinTrader remains a reasonable choice for users who want a long-established local desk and direct rand markets without global platform complexity.

The tax position changed on 1 March 2026

Crypto asset service providers with a South African nexus now report user and transaction information to SARS.
The first reporting period runs to 28 February 2027, the first return is due by 31 May 2027, and the first international exchange of that information is scheduled for September 2027.
Individual taxpayers do not report under CARF directly, and still declare crypto through their income tax returns as before.
Anyone who has been informal about record-keeping should read our South Africa crypto tax guide before the first reporting period closes.

Best crypto exchanges in Nigeria

Nigeria is the largest crypto market on the continent and the one with the widest gap between activity and formal infrastructure.
$92.1 billion in on-chain value received over twelve months is roughly three times South Africa's figure, driven by naira depreciation and restricted dollar access rather than by trading appetite.
The Investments and Securities Act 2025 changed the legal footing by classifying virtual assets as securities and giving the SEC explicit statutory authority over digital asset exchanges.
What it has not yet produced is a fully licensed exchange.
Peer-to-peer marketplaces remain a major channel for Nigerian users, where escrow protects the trade but the counterparty is another individual.
Quidax and Busha offer order-book naira trading as an alternative to informal P2P channels, and Luno now operates in Nigeria under the same incubation programme.
MEXC's role in Nigeria is the same as elsewhere on this continent: a trading venue reached after the naira has already become crypto, not a naira on-ramp.
Nigerian identity documents are supported for verification, and Nigeria is not on the MEXC Global Card's restricted list.

Kenya, Ghana and the rest of the continent

Kenya's position changed very recently, and most guides have not caught up.
President Ruto assented to the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act in October 2025, but the Act could not be operated until the detailed rules existed.
Those rules arrived on 22 July 2026, when the Virtual Asset Service Providers Regulations 2026 were gazetted under Legal Notice No. 134 and took effect immediately.
Capital thresholds are substantial, at KSh 100 million for an exchange and KSh 300 million for a stablecoin issuer.
Anyone writing that Kenyan trading has already migrated onto licensed platforms is describing a future state, because licensing only opened weeks ago.
Ghana has been developing a framework without yet operating a full licensing regime, and most of the rest of the continent has no dedicated VASP regime at all.
In those markets the practical choice is between pan-African on-ramps built around mobile money and bank transfers, and global platforms reached through P2P.
Yellow Card operates across more than a dozen African markets with a deliberately narrow asset list.

Which Is the Best Crypto Exchange for South Africa and Your Situation?

The dimensions above only matter once mapped to a person.
You are an active trader who rotates positions and wants tokens outside the local listing set.
Run both layers: a licensed local platform for rand or naira, and MEXC for execution at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker with access to newly listed assets and futures.
This is the reader this guide is built for, and the setup section below is your next step.
You are a monthly buyer in South Africa who wants to hold Bitcoin.
Use Luno or VALR, deposit by free EFT, and place a limit order on the exchange screen rather than using the instant-buy button.
You do not need a second account, and that one change saves you more than any platform switch would.
You want local regulatory recourse above everything else.
Use an FSCA-licensed platform and stop there, because MEXC cannot offer you that.
You are in Sudan.
MEXC does not serve you, and you should not attempt to work around that restriction.
You are primarily sending money across borders rather than trading.
A stablecoin-focused pan-African service with mobile money integration will serve you better than any exchange on this page.

Running a two-account setup safely

The mechanics are simple, and the mistakes are expensive.
Step 1: Buy a stablecoin on your local licensed platform.
USDT or USDC bought through the exchange screen rather than the instant-buy button will cost you a fraction of the alternative.
Step 2: Send it on the cheapest supported network.
Confirm the network on both sides before sending, because a token sent on a network the receiving platform does not support is usually unrecoverable.
Step 3: Check whether the asset needs a memo or tag.
Assets such as XRP and XLM require a destination tag, and omitting it is one of the most common ways people lose a transfer.
Step 4: Send a small test amount first.
The network fee on a test transfer is trivial compared with the cost of getting the first one wrong.
Step 5: Confirm your own eligibility before depositing.
Check the current list of restricted countries and regions and the User Agreement rather than relying on a third-party summary.

P2P safety, because this is where African users lose money

Peer-to-peer trading is normal infrastructure across most of this continent, and it has a specific fraud pattern.
Never release crypto from escrow before the funds have cleared in your own bank account, and never accept a screenshot as proof.
Keep every message inside the platform's chat, because moving to WhatsApp or Telegram removes your evidence trail in a dispute.
Treat any counterparty who asks you to cancel the order and settle privately as a scammer, without exception.
Exchange support staff will never contact you first asking for credentials or a transfer, and fake support accounts are common in this market.

Frequently asked questions

Which crypto exchange has the lowest trading fees among those compared here?
MEXC, at 0.0000% spot maker and 0.0500% taker, the lowest entry-tier rate of the four platforms in this comparison.

Which crypto exchanges are licensed in South Africa?
Luno, VALR and AltCoinTrader hold FSCA crypto asset service provider licences, among 310 approved as at 31 March 2026.
Global exchanges including MEXC are not FSCA-licensed.

Can I use MEXC in South Africa and Nigeria?
Yes, neither country appears in MEXC's prohibited jurisdictions list.
Sudan is the only African country named there.

Can I deposit rand or naira directly on a global crypto exchange?
Generally no, which is why most African traders use a local platform for fiat and a global one for trading.
MEXC does not operate direct ZAR or NGN bank rails.

What is the cheapest way to buy crypto in Africa?
Deposit by free bank transfer and place a limit order on an exchange order book rather than using an instant-buy button.
On published rates that difference is 0.60% against 3.9% on the same platform.

Is crypto trading legal in Nigeria in 2026?
Yes, the Investments and Securities Act 2025 classifies virtual assets as securities regulated by the SEC.
Firms currently operate on Approval-in-Principle rather than full licences.

Do I pay tax on crypto in South Africa?
Yes, and since 1 March 2026 service providers report your transactions to SARS under the CARF.
You still declare crypto through your own income tax return.

Is P2P trading safe for African users?
It is workable with escrow, but only if you confirm cleared funds in your bank before releasing crypto.
Keep all communication inside the platform chat.

Risks and regulatory notice

Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose the full amount you put in.
Futures and leveraged products magnify both gains and losses and are not suitable for most retail users.
Regulatory treatment differs sharply between African countries and is changing quickly, so confirm your own position before opening any account.
MEXC does not hold a licence from any African financial regulator, and users in markets with licensed local alternatives should weigh that when deciding where to hold funds.
Nothing here is financial, legal or tax advice.
Fees, availability and regulatory status were verified on 28 August 2026 and are subject to change without notice.
Compare the numbers yourself.
Check MEXC's published spot and futures rates against what you are paying today.
