Bithumb is a Korean won exchange that most non-Korean residents cannot register for, because sign-up runs through a Korean real-name bank account.
Within this comparison, MEXC is our top pick for traders outside Korea: 1,638 listed coins against Bithumb's 479, USDT quoting instead of won, and a 0.0000% spot maker fee that carries no expiry date.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick among these Bithumb alternatives, on listing breadth, USDT quoting and a maker fee with no expiry date.
  • Most readers outside South Korea cannot open a Bithumb account at all, because sign-up requires a real-name account at KB Kookmin Bank.
  • Bithumb's widely quoted 0.04% fee is an opt-in that lapses after 30 days, and the rate it reverts to is 0.25%.
  • Bithumb lists 479 coins against MEXC's 1,638, almost all of them quoted in Korean won (CoinGecko, 2 September 2026).
  • Bithumb offers no futures and no margin trading, so hedging or shorting needs a second account either way.
  • Bithumb still holds a South Korean VASP registration that MEXC does not, and its opt-in taker rate undercuts MEXC's standard 0.0500%.

The MEXC View: Why We Rank Ourselves First Here, and Where We Do Not

This article is published by MEXC, so you should read our conclusion with that in mind.
Here is the reasoning, stated plainly enough that you can check it.
For a trader outside South Korea, this is not a close comparison, because the deciding factor is not price.
It is that Bithumb's account opening runs through a Korean real-name bank account, so the fee schedule you came to compare is one you will never be billed under.
Once access is the constraint, the ranking follows from three published numbers: 1,638 listed coins against 479, USDT quoting against Korean won, and a 0.0000% spot maker rate against a 0.04% rate that expires every 30 days.
We would rather name the places we lose than have you find them yourself.
Bithumb holds a South Korean VASP registration operating under a comprehensive national framework, and CoinGecko records MEXC's strongest sourced licence as an International Crypto License from the Comoros.
Bithumb's applied taker rate of 0.04% is lower than our standard 0.0500% taker rate.
Bithumb charges nothing to withdraw USDT over Tron.
And if you live in Korea, we are not a legal option for you and this article will not pretend otherwise.
Everything below is the evidence for both halves of that.

Most Readers Cannot Open a Bithumb Account at All

Search results for Bithumb are full of reviews from 2023 claiming the exchange is open to traders worldwide.
Those pages have not been updated.
South Korea requires exchanges to onboard customers through real-name verified bank accounts, and Bithumb's banking partner is KB Kookmin Bank.
Completing sign-up in practice means holding three things at once: Korean residency documentation, a Korean mobile number registered in your own name, and a real-name account at the partner bank.
Miss any one of them and the flow does not complete.
This is the single fact that reorders every other consideration in a Bithumb alternatives comparison, because fee tables and coin counts only matter after the account exists.
The direction of travel points the same way.
On 3 August 2026 Bithumb published a listing roadmap targeting a 2028 IPO, its third published listing target, with internal control upgrades and the K-IFRS accounting transition to be completed in 2026 and a preliminary listing review filed in 2027.
A company spending two years on domestic compliance groundwork and a Korean listing is not a company building an international retail platform.

Why MEXC Is Our Top Pick for Traders Outside Korea

The reader this article is written for has usually arrived the same way.
A token moved after a Korean listing, you went looking for the venue, and you found a sign-up page you cannot finish.
MEXC answers that in three ways, and each one is checkable against a published page rather than a marketing claim.

Access and quote currency

MEXC quotes in USDT rather than Korean won, which removes both the fiat rail problem and the currency conversion that comes with it.
The MEXC User Agreement names 12 prohibited countries and territories plus the Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine, and South Korea is not among them, though the regulatory section below explains why Korean residents should still not treat that as an invitation.

Listing breadth

That is roughly three and a half times as many listed assets, and they are quoted in a currency you can actually fund.

Derivatives, which Bithumb does not have at all

CoinGecko records margin trading as unavailable on Bithumb, and the exchange lists no futures products.
MEXC runs USDT-margined perpetuals from 0.000% maker, with BTCUSDT carrying a Special Rate of 0.000% maker and 0.020% taker on the official fee page.
If you want to hedge a Korean-listed narrative token rather than only buy it, Bithumb cannot be your only account under any circumstances.

What $500,000 a Month in Spot Volume Actually Costs

Run the same volume through both fee schedules and the picture is more interesting than a simple win.
At $500,000 in monthly spot volume, Bithumb's standard 0.25% costs $15,000 a year.
With the 0.04% opt-in active, that drops to $2,400.
MEXC's standard 0.0500% taker rate costs $3,000, so on taker orders alone Bithumb's applied rate is genuinely cheaper by $600 a year.
Enable MX fee deduction and MEXC's taker rate becomes 0.0400%, which lands at exactly $2,400 and ties.
The gap opens on the other side of the book.
MEXC's maker rate is 0.0000%, so the same volume placed as limit orders costs nothing, against $2,400 a year on Bithumb's applied rate.
There is a second number that matters more than either of those.
Bithumb's 0.04% rate expires 30 days after you register for it, and the official fee page states that customers who have not registered pay the standard 0.25%.
Forget to renew for a single month and that month costs $1,250 instead of $200.
The $1,050 difference wipes out roughly 1.75 years of the taker-side advantage, and it is an entirely administrative failure rather than a trading one.
MEXC's 0.0000% maker rate has no renewal step and no expiry date attached to it.

The 0.04% Figure Is an Opt-In, Not a Default

Almost every third-party page describes Bithumb's fees as a range running from 0.04% to 0.25%, presented as though it were a volume ladder.
It is not one.
Bithumb's own fee page shows the KRW market at a standard 0.25% for both maker and taker orders, struck through and replaced by 0.04% for customers who register through the benefits menu.
Four details from that page change how the number should be read:
  • The 0.04% rate applies for 30 days from the date of registration, not indefinitely.
  • Customers who do not register are charged the standard 0.25%, stated explicitly on the page.
  • The maker and taker rates are identical in the KRW market, so there is no rebate for providing liquidity.
  • A separate fee-free coupon exchanged with points cannot be combined with the 0.04% rate.
The BTC market sits at a struck-through 0.25% with fees currently waived, which is a promotional state rather than a permanent schedule.
Membership tiers add a rebate on top, running from 0.003% at the entry grade to a combined 0.02% at the highest, and the page states the fee policy can be changed at the company's discretion.
None of this makes Bithumb expensive when the opt-in is live.
It makes the low number conditional, and conditional pricing is worth knowing about before you build a trading routine around it.

Every Bithumb Alternative, Reviewed One by One

MEXC

Benefits: a 0.0000% spot maker rate with no volume minimum and no expiry; 1,638 listed coins on CoinGecko, more than three times Bithumb's 479; USDT-margined perpetuals that Bithumb and Upbit do not offer at all; a CoinGecko Trust Score of 10 out of 10 and a three-star CORE3 cybersecurity rating.
Limitations: no Korean won rail, so Korean residents have no compliant on-ramp; CoinGecko records its regulatory standing as an International Crypto License from the Comoros and describes that framework as defined but unproven, which is a materially weaker position than a Korean VASP registration; the User Agreement bars 12 named jurisdictions and the list can change without notice.

Bithumb

Benefits: a South Korean VASP registration under a comprehensive domestic framework; genuine Korean won depth, with USDT/KRW turning over roughly $116 million in a single day; free USDT withdrawals over the Tron network with a minimum of 0.000001; an applied taker rate of 0.04% that undercuts MEXC's standard taker rate.
Limitations: registration is effectively closed to non-residents; no futures and no margin trading; 479 listed coins, the narrowest set here; a one-star CORE3 cybersecurity rating on the same scale where MEXC scores three.

Upbit

Benefits: the largest Korean exchange by reported 24-hour volume on CoinGecko, about $438 million against Bithumb's $341 million on 2 September 2026; a 0.05% KRW market fee with no opt-in step attached; a Major Payment Institution licence in Singapore alongside its Korean registration; separate regional platforms in Southeast Asia.
Limitations: 343 listed coins, fewer than Bithumb; BTC and USDT markets charge 0.25%, five times the KRW market rate; no derivatives; the same residency wall as Bithumb on the Korean platform.

Binance

Benefits: the largest centralised spot market share of any exchange here, at 39.2% across 2025 on CoinGecko's full-year data; the widest product surface including options and structured products; extensive fiat coverage.
Limitations: a 0.10% standard spot rate against MEXC's 0.0500% taker and 0.0000% maker; a long and shifting list of restricted markets; a fee discount that requires holding its native token.

OKX

Benefits: the lowest standard maker rate among the three global majors here at 0.08%; a Web3 wallet and on-chain aggregator inside the same account; deep perpetual markets.
Limitations: 0.08% maker is still meaningfully above 0.0000%; no fiat deposit recorded by CoinGecko, so funding runs through P2P and card routes; regional restrictions apply.

Bybit

Benefits: the second-largest centralised spot market share in 2025 at 8.1% on CoinGecko's data, alongside deep perpetual markets; a simple flat 0.10% spot schedule with no tiering to decode; strong platform tooling for active traders.
Limitations: spot fees are the highest of the three global majors listed here; spot listings run well behind MEXC's 1,638 on CoinGecko's counts; it holds no VASP registration in South Korea and its app was pulled from the Korean Google Play Store in 2026, so it is not a clean answer for readers inside Korea.

Where Bithumb Still Wins

Four things about Bithumb hold up under scrutiny, and a comparison that skipped them would not be worth reading.
Regulatory standing.
Bithumb is a registered Korean VASP operating under a comprehensive licensing regime with real-name banking, AML obligations and client asset protection requirements.
CoinGecko's own regulatory field describes Bithumb's framework as regionally recognised and comprehensive, and describes MEXC's Comoros licence as defined but unproven.
That is a gap in Bithumb's favour, and no fee advantage closes it.
Applied taker pricing.
While the opt-in is live, 0.04% beats MEXC's standard 0.0500% taker rate outright.
Free USDT withdrawals on Tron.
Bithumb's official withdrawal schedule shows no fee for USDT over the Tron network, with a minimum withdrawal of 0.000001.
Plenty of global exchanges charge for that route.
Incident handling in February 2026.
The mistaken credit described in the timeline below was detected in about 20 minutes, accounts were frozen within about 40, 99.7% was recovered, the shortfall was covered from company funds, and affected sellers were reimbursed at 110% of their losses.
Bithumb published the recovery figure and the compensation terms within two days of the error.

Listed Assets and What You Can Actually Quote In

A coin count on its own is a weak comparison, because a long tail of illiquid listings is not an asset.
What decides this one is breadth combined with quote currency: for a trader outside Korea a won-quoted pair is barely a listing at all, because reaching it requires a currency you have no compliant way to hold.
One honest caveat on liquidity: CoinGecko records Bithumb's average bid-ask spread at 0.743% against MEXC's 0.845%, so on that exchange-wide measure Bithumb is tighter, even though the same source rates its overall liquidity as low and MEXC's as moderate.

Who Can and Cannot Open a Bithumb Account

If you live in South Korea.
Bithumb is available to you and this article is not going to tell you to move.
Korea operates a VASP registration regime, MEXC is not registered under it, and a page written for global readers is the wrong place to give Korean residents advice about domestic platforms.
Bithumb, Upbit, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax are the exchanges with real-name bank partnerships that allow won deposits, and any comparison between them belongs with sources subject to Korean rules.
If you found something called Bithumb Global.
Bithumb Global was launched in May 2019 as a separately incorporated Seychelles entity and was later renamed BitGlobal, and it is not the exchange described in this article.
Major market data platforms no longer track it as an active venue, so treat any page presenting it as an official global version of Bithumb with caution.
If you live anywhere else.
You cannot register with Bithumb, and the alternatives table above is the practical starting point.
Check the restricted jurisdiction list of whichever platform you pick before depositing, because every exchange in that table maintains one and every one of them reserves the right to change it.

Is Bithumb Safe? The 2025 to 2028 Timeline, Without Spin

Three separate threads run through Bithumb's recent record, and they are easy to conflate.
Keeping them apart is the only fair way to read the company.

The listing timetable

Samsung Securities was named lead underwriter in late 2023 for what was then a KOSDAQ bid, that plan was dropped in early 2024, and by September 2024 Bithumb was reported to be considering a Nasdaq listing instead.
It restructured in July 2025 to prepare, splitting into Bithumb Korea for the exchange business and Bithumb A for venture investments.
The 3 August 2026 notice moved the target to 2028, with a listing review filing to follow the internal control work.

The USDT market

Bithumb opened a USDT market in beta on 22 September 2025, sharing an order book with an overseas venue to bring in international liquidity.
Korea's Financial Intelligence Unit opened a review on 1 October 2025.
The market closed at 11:00 KST on 28 November 2025, with pending USDT orders cancelled, while the ten affected coins continued trading against the won.
Bithumb's own notice attributed the closure to system improvement and said a reopening schedule would follow.
Whatever the merits on either side, the practical result is that Bithumb's one attempt at an internationally quoted market lasted about two months.

The FIU sanction

No final judgment had been reported as of 2 September 2026.
Context matters here: the same enforcement wave reached Upbit's operator Dunamu, whose three-month suspension and 35.2 billion won fine were overturned and appealed, along with Coinone and Korbit.
This is an industry-wide supervisory push rather than a single-platform problem.

The February 2026 credit error

On 6 February 2026 Bithumb ran a promotional draw intended to pay several hundred customers small won-denominated rewards.
An employee entered the payout unit as Bitcoin rather than won, crediting about 620,000 BTC across those accounts, briefly worth more than $40 billion at prevailing prices.
The balances exceeded Bithumb's actual Bitcoin holdings, which is a reminder that exchange ledgers and on-chain reserves are different things.
Bithumb detected the error in about 20 minutes and froze the accounts within about 40, recovering 618,212 BTC, or 99.7%.
Roughly 1,788 BTC had been sold before the freeze, and Bithumb covered the shortfall from its own funds, reimbursed affected sellers at 110% of their losses, and paid every active user a 20,000 won apology credit.
It filed four recovery suits in March 2026 and won the first two at the Seoul Central District Court on 26 and 27 August 2026, with two still pending.
Worth knowing before this reads as unique to Bithumb: MEXC's own User Agreement contains an equivalent clause, reserving the right to correct handling errors and requiring users to return digital assets received in excess.
Both platforms carry this term because both run an internal ledger that can be entered incorrectly.

Moving Assets Off Bithumb in Three Steps

If you already hold a Bithumb account and are consolidating elsewhere, the withdrawal schedule is where the money leaks.

Step 1. Pick the network before you pick the amount

Bithumb charges 0.005 ETH to withdraw Ether over Ethereum mainnet, 0.00000175 ETH over Arbitrum One and 0.00000018 ETH over Optimism.
At roughly $2,426 per ETH those work out to about $12.13, less than half a cent, and a small fraction of a cent respectively.
The mainnet route costs roughly 2,857 times the Arbitrum route for the identical asset.

Step 2. Watch for percentage-based withdrawal fees

Most assets carry a flat withdrawal fee, but the fee column is explicitly labelled as quantity or percentage, and several assets including NFT, SUN, XEC, EGLD and MASK are charged at 1% of the withdrawal amount.
On a $1,000 withdrawal that is $10, against zero for USDT sent over Tron.
Check the asset before you send, not after.

Step 3. Confirm the destination network and any tag

XRP withdrawals carry a 0.4 XRP fee and a 1 XRP minimum, and XRP deposits at most destinations require a destination tag that is not part of the address.
Sending to the right address with a missing or wrong tag is a common way people lose access to a transfer, and it is not reversible by either exchange.
One correction worth making, because it appears on almost every comparison page covering Bithumb: the widely quoted 0.001 BTC figure is the minimum withdrawal amount, not the fee.
The actual Bitcoin withdrawal fee on Bithumb's official schedule is 0.0002 BTC, five times lower than the number in circulation.

Which Platform Fits Which Trader

You found a token through a Korean listing and want to trade it.
MEXC is the answer in this comparison: the token is far more likely to be among its 1,638 listings, it will be quoted in USDT, the maker rate is 0.0000% with no renewal step, and a perpetual often exists alongside the spot pair.
Open an account, complete verification, and start with a small position while you check the depth on the specific pair you care about.
You need the deepest possible book on BTC or ETH.
Binance, and the fee difference is a fair price for the liquidity if your size is large enough to move a thinner book.
You are derivatives-first and spot is incidental.
Bybit or OKX deserve a look alongside MEXC, and the decision should turn on the specific contracts you trade rather than on headline rates.
You are a Korean resident.
Your options are the domestically registered exchanges, and this article does not make a recommendation among them.
You want a licensed venue above all else.
None of the offshore platforms in this comparison, including MEXC, holds the kind of comprehensive national licence that Bithumb holds in Korea, and if that is your deciding factor you should choose a platform licensed in your own jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Bithumb outside South Korea?
In practice, no.
Registration requires Korean residency documentation and a real-name account at its partner bank, which non-residents cannot obtain.

Is Bithumb Global the same as Bithumb?
No.
Bithumb Global was a separate Seychelles entity launched in 2019, later renamed BitGlobal, and major data platforms no longer track it as active.

Does Bithumb offer futures or margin trading?
No.
CoinGecko records margin trading as unavailable and Bithumb lists no futures products, so derivatives require a second account elsewhere.

What are Bithumb's actual trading fees?
The KRW market standard rate is 0.25% for both maker and taker orders.
Registering for the low-fee programme reduces that to 0.04% for 30 days, after which it reverts.

How many coins does Bithumb list compared with global exchanges?
CoinGecko records 479 coins on Bithumb against 1,638 on MEXC as of 2 September 2026.
Bithumb's are quoted almost entirely in Korean won.

What is the best Bithumb alternative for traders outside Korea?
Within this comparison, MEXC: it lists more than three times as many coins, quotes in USDT, and charges 0.0000% spot maker with no expiry.

What happened to Bithumb's USDT market?
It opened in beta on 22 September 2025 and closed on 28 November 2025 following a regulatory review.
USDT pairs were delisted and open orders were cancelled.

Is Bithumb safe after the 2026 credit error and the FIU fine?
Bithumb recovered 99.7% of the mistaken credit, covered the remainder itself, and won a court stay against the FIU suspension pending a final ruling.
Neither matter is fully closed.

Can South Korean residents use overseas crypto exchanges?
Korea requires exchanges serving Korean users to register as VASPs, and most offshore platforms are not registered.
Korean residents should rely on domestically registered venues and local guidance.

Risk and Regulatory Note

MEXC is not registered as a Virtual Asset Service Provider in South Korea and offers no Korean won deposit or withdrawal rail.
MEXC's own app was removed from South Korea's Google Play Store in 2025 under the same unregistered-operator enforcement described above.
The web platform remains reachable, but reachability is not registration and this article does not treat it as one.
Nothing in this article is a recommendation for Korean residents to use an unregistered platform.
MEXC's User Agreement lists 12 prohibited countries and territories together with the Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine, and states that the list is non-exclusive and may change at MEXC's discretion, so confirm your own eligibility in the MEXC User Agreement before registering.
Futures and margin products carry leverage and can lose more than the initial margin, and newly listed small-capitalisation tokens are volatile and can become illiquid without warning.
Fee schedules, listing counts and withdrawal charges on every platform mentioned here change without notice, and all figures reflect a single retrieval date.
