Calculate CFD trading costs with examples covering spreads, commissions, overnight fees and triple swaps. Learn how to find your break-even price.

CFD trading costs usually combine the bid–ask spread, any separate commission or transaction fee, and applicable overnight financing. The final amount depends on the instrument, position size, pricing arrangement and holding period.

The useful number is the net result after the position closes. A favorable price movement can produce a much smaller profit once charges are included, particularly when the trade crosses several overnight settlement points.

This guide follows one hypothetical trade from entry to exit, showing how to calculate costs without counting the spread twice.

Start With the Right CFD Trading Costs Formula

When you use actual executed opening and closing prices:

Net P&L = trading P&L from executed prices − separate commissions + signed swap adjustments − other applicable charges

A swap debit reduces the result; a swap credit increases it. Include any other contract-specific cash adjustments separately when applicable. Before applying the formula, check whether the displayed P&L already includes any of these items.

The spread is already reflected in the executed buy and sell prices. Subtracting it again would overstate the cost.

If you instead estimate a trade using midpoint prices, you must account for the difference between those reference prices and the prices at which you can buy and sell. Keep one calculation basis throughout.

Calculate the Spread and Commission on One Trade

Use the following hypothetical gold CFD inputs:

  • One lot represents 100 ounces.
  • The position is 0.10 lot, representing 10 ounces.
  • The opening bid is $3,000.00 and the opening ask is $3,000.40.
  • Commission is $6 per lot on entry and $6 per lot on exit.

These illustrative prices and fees are calculation inputs. Apply your provider’s current rates when estimating a real trade.

The Spread Explains the Initial Floating Loss

You open a long position by buying at the ask of $3,000.40. At that moment, the quoted price for selling is $3,000.00.

If the quotes remain unchanged, immediately closing the position would produce:

($3,000.00 − $3,000.40) × 10 ounces = −$4.00

That $4 difference reflects the spread. A separate opening commission may also affect account equity, even if it appears in a different transaction-history field.

For this unchanged-quote example:

Spread cost = spread per ounce × ounces of exposure

$0.40 × 10 = $4.00

Spreads can change. A spread observed before entry does not guarantee the same spread will be available when you close.

Check Whether Commission Is Charged Per Side

Under the assumed schedule, the opening commission is:

0.10 lot × $6 per lot = $0.60

The closing commission is another $0.60, giving a total commission of $1.20.

The charging basis matters. A quoted rate might apply only on entry, on each side, or to the complete opening-and-closing transaction. Minimum charges and volume tiers can also affect the result.

MetaTrader 5’s contract-specification documentation distinguishes commissions by entry, exit or both, as well as by lot or deal. Confirm what the rate covers before multiplying it.

On a commission-free pricing plan, include the spread and applicable overnight charges in the cost estimate.

Count Overnight Fees by Rollover, Including Triple Swaps

Overnight financing, often called swap or rollover, applies according to the contract’s settlement schedule. Count the relevant cutoffs and their multipliers rather than simply counting calendar dates.

For the same 0.10-lot position, assume a hypothetical long-position swap debit of $15 per lot for an ordinary rollover.

Ordinary rollover debit = 0.10 × $15 = $1.50

Crossing one ordinary cutoff therefore adds $1.50 to the costs.

Now assume the position crosses three cutoffs carrying multipliers of one, three and one:

Chargeable swap units = 1 + 3 + 1 = 5

Total swap debit = $1.50 × 5 = $7.50

The triple rollover contributes three ordinary units in total. Holiday schedules and instrument-specific rules can change the applicable multipliers.

Convert Swap Points Into Money Before Comparing Costs

Swap quotations are not always cash amounts. MetaTrader 5 supports several calculation types, including points, currencies and percentages.

For a swap quoted in points, the calculation can be expressed as:

Cash swap adjustment = lots × swap points × cash value of one point for one lot × rollover multiplier

Use the correct point value and convert into the account currency where required. A displayed swap figure of −15 points is not automatically a $15 debit.

Compare Intraday and Multi-Day Net Profit

Suppose the same long position eventually closes at a bid of $3,002.00. For comparison, assume each holding-period scenario ends at that identical closing price.

Trading P&L from executed prices is:

($3,002.00 − $3,000.40) × 10 = $16.00

The spread has already affected this result through the opening ask and closing bid.

Closing Before Any Chargeable Rollover

With $1.20 of total commission and no overnight adjustment:

Net profit = $16.00 − $1.20 = $14.80

Crossing One Ordinary Rollover

With the assumed $1.50 swap debit:

Net profit = $16.00 − $1.20 − $1.50 = $13.30

Crossing the Three Cutoffs With Five Swap Units

With the assumed $7.50 total swap debit:

Net profit = $16.00 − $1.20 − $7.50 = $7.30

The position size and executed opening and closing prices are identical in these comparisons. The holding schedule accounts for the difference in net profit.

For a cross-check, assume the closing ask is $3,002.40. The midpoint rose from $3,000.20 to $3,002.20, equivalent to a $20 reference-price gain across 10 ounces. Deducting the $4 spread effect produces the same $16 trading P&L before separate charges.

Use either the executed-price calculation or a properly adjusted reference-price calculation. Combining both deductions would count the spread twice.

Calculate the Price Needed to Break Even

For the scenario with $1.20 of commission and $7.50 of swap debits, separate charges total:

$1.20 + $7.50 = $8.70

The required favorable movement from the executed opening ask to the closing bid is:

$8.70 ÷ 10 ounces = $0.87 per ounce

The break-even closing bid is therefore:

$3,000.40 + $0.87 = $3,001.27

At that closing bid, trading P&L would be $8.70, matching the assumed separate charges.

This is a break-even estimate under the stated assumptions. Changing swap rates, additional rollovers, commissions or execution prices changes the calculation.

Check the Actual Cost Inputs on MEXC

The MEXC CFD product information, reviewed on November 1, 2026, describes transaction costs as floating spreads, fixed fees and overnight swaps, with differences by asset type.

The MEXC XAUUSD contract information provides contract size, separate long and short swap quotations, swap type and the triple-swap day. At review, it displayed a points-based swap calculation and Wednesday as the triple-swap day.

Use the current instrument and account information to establish the applicable transaction charge, its charging basis and the cash value of the swap. Reconcile the completed trade against the account’s transaction records.

For a full account-level review, also check any applicable currency-conversion, withdrawal or account charges separately from trading costs.

MEXC’s view is that the useful cost benchmark is the complete position over its intended holding period. A narrow spread can matter most for frequent short trades, while swap differences become more significant across repeated rollovers.

When selecting a provider, compare the same instrument exposure and holding assumptions. Our guide to platforms for CFD trading with USDT covers the broader account and pricing differences.

FAQ

Does Higher Leverage Reduce CFD Trading Costs?

For an unchanged position size, a smaller margin requirement does not reduce costs quoted per lot or based on market exposure. Using additional leverage to open a larger position can increase the cash charges.

The relationship between collateral and exposure is explained in our guide to CFD margin and leverage.

Can a Short CFD Position Receive a Swap Credit?

Some instruments and directions can receive a credit. Check the separate long and short quotations and the calculation type. A short position does not automatically qualify for positive swap.

Do Opposite Positions Cancel Their Trading Costs?

Holding a long and short position does not automatically cancel commissions, spreads or overnight adjustments. Check each position’s charges and the provider’s rules. Long and short swap quotations can differ substantially.

Is Slippage Another Commission?

Slippage is the difference between an expected or requested execution price and the actual fill. It affects trading P&L through the executed price rather than necessarily appearing as a separate fee.

If your calculation already uses actual fills, avoid deducting that same execution difference again.

Risk Warning

CFDs are leveraged products that can generate rapid losses. Variable spreads, financing charges, adverse execution and margin requirements can worsen the outcome or trigger forced closure. Cost estimates depend on current contract terms and market conditions and do not guarantee a trading result.
