Mantle Tokenholders Approve $68M Aave Credit Facility After Exploit

Mantle tokenholders have approved a proposal to establish a credit facility of up to 30,000 Ether (ETH), worth approximately $68 million, for Aave DAO. This move aims to address the fallout from the rsETH exploit that occurred in April, which left Aave grappling with substantial bad debt.

The proposal, known as MIP-34, concluded with a successful vote on the Snapshot DAO governance platform. It enables the Mantle Foundation to negotiate and execute the terms of the loan with Aave DAO, provided Aave implements its recovery plan. The loan would come from the Mantle Treasury and is part of a broader effort to stabilize Aave's lending markets, which were shaken by the exploit.

The attack involved the deposit of 89,567 unbacked rsETH into Aave, allowing the attacker to borrow around $190 million in Wrapped Ether (WETH), staked ETH (wstETH), and stablecoins. This created potential bad debt estimated between $123.7 million and $230.1 million, according to earlier reports. The remediation phase now aims to restore confidence in Aave's platform after the liquidity stress caused by the exploit.

Liquidity Strain in Aave's WETH Market

The rsETH exploit had significant repercussions on Aave’s Wrapped Ether (WETH) lending market, pushing its utilization rates to extreme levels. According to research by Galaxy, WETH utilization remained above 99% for nearly 13 days post-incident. High utilization levels indicate that nearly all supplied assets were borrowed, leaving minimal liquidity for withdrawals.

Although the market has since cooled, it remains under pressure. Data from Aavescan shows that as of Friday, the WETH market utilization has dropped to 91.6%, with about 2.02 million WETH supplied and 1.85 million WETH borrowed. However, these figures still reflect a tight liquidity environment, with supply contraction outpacing the decline in borrows.

The Mantle credit facility is seen as a critical step in easing these liquidity challenges and providing a financial backstop as Aave implements measures to address the exploit's impact.

What’s Next?

This credit facility approval underscores the growing role of decentralized treasuries in responding to crises within the DeFi ecosystem. While the immediate liquidity strains are starting to ease, the finalization of terms between Mantle and Aave, along with the successful implementation of Aave’s recovery plan, will be key milestones to watch.

For Aave users and tokenholders, the focus now shifts to how effectively this collaboration can resolve the bad debt issue and stabilize its lending markets. Market participants will also be watching for any broader implications this may have on the governance and resilience of DeFi protocols facing similar challenges.
