The Defense Department revealed Friday that it has formalized AI partnerships with seven leading technology firms to implement sophisticated artificial intelligence capabilities across its most secure classified military infrastructure. The selected companies include Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, and Reflection AI.
These partnerships authorize the technology providers to deploy their solutions within the Pentagon’s Impact Level 6 and 7 network infrastructures. These classification levels represent the highest security tiers employed across U.S. military operations.
Friday’s disclosure also represents the Pentagon’s first public acknowledgment of its partnership with Google, which news outlets had previously reported earlier in the week.
Amazon Web Services completed its contract negotiations late Thursday evening, according to two Pentagon officials with knowledge of the discussions.
Notably absent from the list is Anthropic. The Defense Department designated Anthropic as a supply-chain security concern earlier this year and prohibited both Pentagon personnel and contractors from utilizing its platforms. Officials have mandated the removal of all Anthropic products over a six-month timeline.
Despite the official prohibition, Pentagon employees, former government officials, and IT contractors informed Reuters they remain hesitant to abandon Anthropic’s platforms. Many consider the company’s technology superior to competing options currently available.
Mythos has been distributed to multiple companies and organizations to bolster IT infrastructure defenses against cyber threats. Whether the Pentagon has obtained access to the preview release remains unconfirmed.
President Donald Trump indicated last week that Anthropic was “shaping up” from his administration’s perspective. This statement has sparked speculation about a potential reconsideration of Anthropic’s exclusion from Pentagon operations.
The Pentagon’s GenAI.mil platform has recorded usage by more than 1.3 million Defense Department employees during its initial five-month operational period.
Military personnel leverage AI tools for mission planning, logistical coordination, target identification, and numerous other functions designed to accelerate large-scale military operations.
Pentagon officials stated that broadening their roster of AI technology providers will help prevent “vendor lock,” a term referencing the department’s substantial dependence on Anthropic’s platforms.
The Defense Department’s official statement characterized the agreements as efforts to “accelerate the transformation toward establishing the United States military as an AI-first fighting force.”
The initiative to incorporate multiple technology vendors emerges as the Pentagon seeks to diversify its artificial intelligence supply chain and minimize reliance on individual providers.
The latest milestone involved Amazon Web Services completing its contractual agreement late Thursday, mere hours prior to the Pentagon’s Friday morning announcement.
